Axamer Lizum, close to Innsbruck and part of the Innsbruck region pass
Close to Innsbruck, the ski resort of Axamer Lizum offers dramatic scenery and interesting skiing in an average sized ski area.
Host to the 1964 Winter Olympics, the resort offers a quick ride to the peak on the mountain railway - from there the skier can take either the mens or womens downhill course. Axamer Lizum is a favourite with the Innsbruck locals and the area has recently expanded to take in the new lifts at Mutters. Extensive off piste terrain and tree skiing are on offer. Whilst the ski area is small in comparison to other resorts in Tirol, there is extensive off-piste skiing and sections that connect the main ski pistes which add to the ski terrain. Off-piste skiing is extensive and pretty easy to get to. Accommodation in Axamer Lizum itself gives immediate access to the slopes whilst accommodation located down in the valley beneath Axamer Lizum allows a couple of great ski outs (weather permitting). Axamer Lizum has some really authentic ski huts for daytime dining and one highly impressive modern restaurant. After dark there are a few places to eat and drink in Axamer Lizum but nothing like the selection in the valley below, or beyond in Innsbruck.
