Ski holidays in the capital city of Tirol - Innsbruck

Innsbruck, the capital of Tirol, is possibly the biggest ski resort in the world, but for the fact that it is really a regional capital and working city.

It is common to see suited men and women walking through Innsbruck dropping their skis off for service. Innsbruck is dominated by skiing and mountains tower above the city. At night the lights of ski lift stations illuminate the sky and during the morning the city is busy with skiers making their way to one of the ski resorts that encircle Innsbruck. There is one ski resort accessed directly for the city, that of Nordpark (also known as Seegrube) – a new tram and cable car link the Old Town with the fearsomely steep peak station of the resort. Slightly further afield are the resorts of Igls, Mutters and Schlick which offer good family and beginner terrain and the resort of Axamer Lizum that has more varied and advances skiing. Linked by a free bus is the Stubai Glacier that offers a snow guarantee and year-round skiing. All ski resorts on the Innsbruck ski pass are linked by a free bus directly from hotels in the city. The nightlife in Innsbruck centre is not slope-side après ski but rather more cosmopolitan, with a massive student population adding to the mix. Add to all this the fact that Innsbruck International Airport is only 4 km from the Old Town of Innsbruck and you have one of the great ski cities.
