Ischgl, Austria - for vast ski terrain, great off piste skiing and some of the best apres ski anywhere

Ischgl is the 2nd best ski destination in Austria, both for its vast and modern ski area and its après ski, party spirit.

With a vast and ever-expanding ski terrain, Ischgl as a ski destination is very definitely the 2nd best ski area in Austria. The resort and the highest ski lifts ensure great snow across the huge bowls that form the ski area. Coupled with that the compact village is full of action after the skiing, the après ski bars are dotted along and around the ski-outs into the village. Three gondolas form the entry and exit points to the ski area, and some chose to download at the end of the day and avoid the traffic on the village bound runs. The ski area of Ischgl stretches across several bowls and is mostly intermediate and there is a lengthy red run over into the Swiss ski resort of Samnaun. That said there are huge off-piste areas to tackle in good snow for more advanced skiers, as well as a large nursery area located at mid mountain so those new to the sport are not excluded from the breathtaking views on offer. The village is very well laid out with three seperate high capacity gondolas taking skiers up the mountain from various points in the village. The apres ski is absolutely riotous. In Ischgl, expect to find Lederhosen-Techno in most bars that will go on until the early hours. Despite this the resort has a somewhat exclusive side to it, although not on the scale of the high end Swiss and French resorts. There are exclusive hotels and bars but in the main everyone seems content to throw themselves around to classic après ski tunes.
