The ski holiday resorts of Obergurgl and Hochgurgl offers high altitude, and snow-sure ski terrain, from 2 refined villages at the upper reaches of the Oetz Valley, Austria.
Obergurgl and Hochgurgl offer slope-side side accommodation in this outpost, some 14km on from the pulsating ski resort of Solden. In comparison both resorts are restrained and lacking the Lederhosen Techno that is so popular in Solden. Obergurgl is located at a snow-sure 1930m whilst Hochgurgl tops out at 2150m. The ski resort locations appear somewhat stark, set in the high altitude and above the tree-line but the villages are anything but, with a welcoming, traditional Austrian feel and quality accommodation on offer. As well as the slopes running straight down to the resorts, there are cross country ski trails and toboggan tracks that run to the village, ensuring that visitors are always active.

Given the altitude, the ski seasons are famously long in Obergurgl and Hochgurgl and the highest skiing, located above Hochgurgl has a real glacier feel to it. The views are dramatic and the only negative with such altitude are the conditions in bad weather when the lack of trees can make the visibility poor. Set across two mountains and linked by a gondola that runs almost horizontally the ski areas offer big and varied terrain. Further down the mountain much of the skiing is geared toward beginner and intermediate levels, but higher up there is plenty of challenging steep terrain with huge off-piste skiing available after new snow. Enjoy lunch in a mountain restaurant and admire the incredible views across the glaciers and to the Wildspitze, the highest peak in the Austrian Tirol.
