Innsbruck delivers a big powder day – 5th December 09
A week ago the lower slopes were very patchy and un-skiable in Axamer Lizum and then bang – right on cue a top, top powder day to start the season! The opening day of Axamer Lizum winter season 2009/10 served up a great day of powder skiing / snowboarding. Several days of heavy snowfall in the mountains around Innsbruck (and even snow as far as the city over the previous days) gave some superb conditions for the season opening at Axamer Lizum. I have had some fantastic season closing days in Axamer Lizum but I think this was the best season opening day I can remember there. The car park filed up late morning as the news of the powder day filtered down to Innsbruck but by that time I had done my lines, hit my only rock of the day save the other one that I landed on and was heading back down to the valley. The glacier season was about 2 weeks later than normal this year and so for the non-glacier skiing resorts. It is never good waiting for the snow but Austria once again delivers the very best of the snow – why ski anywhere else?

Looks great. Hope the abfarht is open soon. Ay plans for a skigloo this season?
The abfahrt looks great higher up and is covered to the base-station at Gotzens. The lower slopes are patchy but we have more snow coming this week so hopefully that great ski piste is open soon. Not sure on the Skigloo front, I think it won’t happen – I have only just sorted out the health care payment from last winter when I spent far too long digging that crazy après ski bar. We will see but I have to say to much time digging that thing last winter means a no – regrettably.
nice camera setup! Can you do jumps with this as well? Was really a great day up in Axamer Lizum and it feels so comforting to know that we have 5 month of skiing ahead of us.
Well i am hoping for 6 months, June always throws up some great conditions on the glaciers - Austria is a 9 month a year ski destination, 12 if you go to the Hintertux but 8 or 9 months of great skiing. Have not tried the camera on a jump yet but it does film a fall really well. I was doing something similar underneath the Pleisen lift, hit one rock and then landed on my hip on another - it took quite a time to get up with a dead leg! What a start to the on-glacier season though!
Nice too see all the snow & fun you’re having there Mattman , save some snow for me & canx the wind! just getting my order in early this time!
The snow is set to fall all week here in Innsbruck - the timing has been perfect as was the opening day on Saturday, it was the best I could remember. I usually don’t venture off-piste after an accident a few years ago when I wrecked my knee ligaments landing on a rock buried under powder snow but I came off a bit better in the powder this time. Off to the Zillertal Arena later in the week and then Zauchensee and the Dachstein Glacier over the weekend - hopefully some great skiing coming up.
Very nice, see you again in week 12..
Hi Petteri, great news, bring your powder planks - we have had some great powder days so far this winter, it is shaping up to be one of the best December powder fests I can remember.
