October skiing on the Austrian glaciers

I have never quite understood how you can measure the snow depth on a glacier but there are far smarter people than me doing exactly that as the glaciers open for the autumn ski season. Topping the table is the Hintertux Glacier that is open throughout the year with around half a metre of snow, whilst the Rettenbach and Tiefenbach glaciers at Solden, the Stubai Glacier and the Kitzsteinhorn Glacier have a small cover on top of the glacier ice. The Pitztal Glacier is open whilst the Kaunertal Glacier is opening as soon as the first snows of the winter season arrive.

Well that will be decided in Copenhagen in December - if business as usual prevails, they are gone for sure. Even if the delegates aren’t skiers or snowboarders, I hope they realise glaciers are natures’ reservoirs - without them there are going to be a hell of a lot of dusty fields and thirsty people.

let’s hope so…besides all the tragic things that could happen I can’t think of winters without snow…

Yes and from a selfish point of view then I could not imagine being without the sheer beauty of fresh snow on a freezing day at 3000m. And if I can’t do that then there is going to be associated tragedy at sea level all over the world.
