Put the speedos back in the drawer - the March snow is coming

return all male swimming thongs to the drawer

The onset of spring invariably worsens my mood and this year is no different. I would unquestionably take 12 months of snow if possible but other than a scientific station in Antarctica I realise this is unlikely and I do fall into line. I am filled with that warm feeling as another cold winter snap arrives here in Innsbruck - the winter so far has been very cold but spring conditions have been with us for over a week now. T shirts are the new fleece and the onset of spring has been convincing till now. The thick clouds moved into the Tirol in early evening and whilst the weather is set to be fair tomorrow it is certainly set to snow over the end of the week and into the weekend. Even for those pining for summer sun, another week without the sight of the dreaded male swimming thong is surely something to celebrate?

good news about the snow coming, music to my ears. As for your bathing attire Matt! you are a typical pom!

Yes the snow is set to arrive overnight - I may have to open a bottle of beer to toast its arrival. As for the pictured bathing garment I have to confess to having worn briefs when I was a young teen. Gross indecency charges might follow should I ever don them again although it seems they are the costume of choice in the Germanic world - no matter how colossal the abdomen above these bad boys, men will stroll the waterfront in these without any shame. Maybe they have hall of mirrors type mirrors at home - that or a very perverse sense of beauty and wellbeing. Let’s hope the snow heralds the arrival of the spring snow frenzy that hits Austria each winter - without doubt the best time to get powder snow!

Is it Australia or New Zealand that has adopted the swimming brief as its national costume?

I had assumed a high degree of wisdom from your past blog comments and had hoped you could shed some light on the speedo status in Australasia. I had also heard that the French were trying to outlaw the wearing of surf shorts in public baths and by chance or design resurrect the fortunes of this aquatic fashion icon. They have done much the same with the one-piece ski suit which seems a right of passage for even the smallest French skiers. Tragic.

Hi Nicola - glad the Speedos didn’t put you off reading the article! Yes snow is set to arrive anytime now although it is not here yet. Powder should be here from tomorrow onwards and if you want to ski the Innsbruck region I would aim for 2 areas over the coming weekend - Axamer Lizum and Nordpark:

    http://www.skiingaustria.co.uk/axamer-lizum.html
    http://www.skiingaustria.co.uk/innsbruck-nordpark.html

Both have great skiing, Innsbruck Nordpark has superb steep skiing and Axamer Lizum has tons of off-piste. The problem with Innsbruck Nordpark is that the locals favour this place on powder days so it gets tracked out quickly. Axamer Lizum offers better tree cover and more north facing slopes so the powder lasts longer and there is often powder on offer days after a snowfall. For the latest snow report as it comes down the just drop a few lines on the blog and we would be happy to let you know the current state of play. I will be in Davos on Saturday but just stop someone in the street or bar in Innsbruck and ask for a powder report and I am sure they will know. Enjoy Mayrhofen as well and if you get chance head over to the Zillertal Arena - it has the best skiing in the Zillertal Valley - trust me!
