Saalbach and Hinterglemm – whats new

I’ve spent the last couple of weeks in Saalbach and Hinterglemm checking out the new huts, cable car and runs with my six year old son.
We firstly tried out the new u-bahn cable car in the Centre of Hinterglemm. The cable car itself was never running at full capacity so luckily no queuing even at new year. The lift takes you up to the newly extended flood lit night runs with a red and a blue option for coming down. The run is in 2 stages and was fun for both of us – wide with and open until 9pm. Do beware though if you are using a points card this run works out “expensive”. At the bottom of this run is a smart new hut – or should I say posh suite of cafes and restaurants. Its called the Schwarzacher and offers great food and drink as well as a chill out lounge – it run by the people who own the hotel next door where we have eaten for years both summer and winter.
Over in Saalbach there are a couple of new huts on the Kholmais mountain. One is a traditional hut which seems to offer the standard fare. Its called the Ederalm and is between run 60 and run 66. Its family run and seems child friendly. The other is an un-named Schirm (umbrella) bar with a portaloo half way down run red run 53. It sounds basic and kind of is but the atmosphere her for après ski is great and its not far to the village after a rum.
Overall the most enjoyable hut award this Chritsmas goes to the Kholmais Stub’n off run 51. We ate here Christmas day. There food is great – they are a little of the beaten track but well worth stopping in for food and drink. A few months ago a friend who lives in the village hade her wedding reception here – it a local favourite – they even have a free internet booth.

Also worth noting for those of you will kids of 6 and over – they can ski all day for 10 Euros on a Saturday. For more information see Power of Zehn. You can also use this pass in Zell and Kaprun.

Hi Saalbach local, thanks for the information about the latest stuff in Saalbach-Hinterglemm. I used the U-bahn and visited the Schwarzacher in December. 2 new great additions to Hinterglemm and both in the same location. I thought the Schwarzacher was really impressive with superb design and some of the best Belgium Fries I have ever tasted. Too many of those though and the belts in cupboard will be surplus to requirements!

I loved my time there, open fires, table service, incredible chips/fries and live music – all very, very good indeed!
