Last weekend was truly summer in Austria - my son and I were sunbathing at the outdoor Pool in Kaprun and enjoying a Jazz breakfast (and wearing shorts) in the hot sunshine at the Tauern Spar. We spent some time last Friday in Salzburg and the temperature was pushing 30 in the Mirabell Gardens. This [...]

Kaprun occupies a spacious valley floor beneath the mighty Kitzsteinhorn Glacier and next to the lakeside ski holiday resort of Zell am See. The all-new Tauern Spa is one of the latest additions to the area as it expands its range of visitor facilities. Open year-round with outdoor thermal pools the Tauern Spa offers superb [...]

Summer holidays for many are about the traditional sandy beach with deck chairs and sun but for those of us who can’t give up our snow in summer there is the Kitzsteinhorn snow beach. It is actually possible to make snow castles with your bucket and spade - although gloves are advised as up on [...]

I keep hearing second hand reports of snow droughts in the Alps??? I should have run my camcorder during the journey I made yesterday from the Kitzsteinhorn Glacier, to Zell am See, onto Leogang and through the Ski Welt. The current snow conditions are really excellent with the biggest snow storm I have seen this [...]

The TV weather channel here in Austria complete with its accompanying Volksmusik is showing a very white landscape across Austria. The Zillertal Arena resorts of Gerlos and Konigsleiten are continuing to see heavy snow as are the Zell am See - Kaprun and Saalbach-Hinterglemm regions. The Kitzsteinhorn Glacier looked in great shape whilst all the [...]

The Austrian Alps are currently getting hit with the first real snow of the winter and around Innsbruck today there was endless and heavy snowfall. Down in Innsbruck at 575m there was cold air and very heavy rain. The freezing level was around 1200m and for the ski areas of the tirol and the glaciers [...]

So after a mild September in the Alps the weather is changing to bring colder and wet weather to Austria. Snow is forecast for the coming days on the higher ground as well as the glaciers and the snow is forecast through into next week. Temperatures are forecast to be down 10-15 degrees celcius on [...]

I have never quite understood how you can measure the snow depth on a glacier but there are far smarter people than me doing exactly that as the glaciers open for the autumn ski season. Topping the table is the Hintertux Glacier that is open throughout the year with around half a metre of snow, [...]

Morning glacier skiing in Solden is now in operation, the Stubai Glacier has skiing on 2 glaciers, the Kitzsteinhorn Glacier has skiing on the upper slopes, whilst the Hintertux Glacier never closed! We are still awaiting the first big falls of snow for the season but the conditions are still ok to get high up [...]
