After a November that can best be described as mild to reasonably cool, very sunny and very, very dry, then the arrival of December is bringing winter fully back to earth with heavy snow set to hit the west of Austria from this weekend onwards. Records for lack of precipitation have been smashed in the [...]

Some kudos but I am sure that they would happily replace that with some snowflakes - Obergurgl in Austria opened on time and has ski pistes running back to the resorts thanks in part to some early season snow and a larger part due to the snow cannons that pump out artificial snow. Temperatures have [...]

After the 5th or so visit to Obergurgl some winters ago I started to think that I kept striking it lucky with the skies and light in Obergurgl offering incredible photographic conditions. To be honest there are more feature rich mountain scapes all over the Alps - Obergurgl is high and stark with stupendous views [...]

Lots of snow coming down right now in Tirol with the snow level down to 800m around Innsbruck. I didn’t manage to get up to Obergurgl today but maybe on the weekend for some of their opening weekend events and some skiing in blizzard conditions! Yes the snow is set to fall all today with [...]

Early season continues to offer some great snow conditions - the skies cleared today after a couple of days of snow and there was around 15cm of new snow at the base-station in Axamer Lizum. More fell on the peak but at the base-station the snow was heavy with sleet partly falling at that altitude. [...]

Obergurgl, with skiing higher than the Kitzsteinhorn Glacier but not actually a glacial ski area has joined the glacier skiing areas in Austria in opening for the 2010/11 season. The ski area opened this weekend due to great early season snow conditions, whilst the official opening takes place a week from now. Snow is forecast [...]

So if you can’t wait for the Arlberg there is always Obergurgl, opening a week earlier than the Arlberg and offering skiing to over 3000m. The glacier season will be months’ old by then and the skiing at Obergurgl / Hochgurgl is not dissimilar to glacier skiing actually. The wide, reasonably gentle slopes, barren mountainsides [...]

What a job - skiing between mountain huts getting beer and cake prices!
Everyone who has travelled (and I mean everyone) has inevitably been drawn into price comparisons with home prices as well as previous excursions – you hear it in every après ski bar, mountain restaurant, lift ticket office queue, everywhere. I was as shocked [...]

It seems on my last post on the Tirol snow card I had failed to read the small print. The card which covers 77 Ski areas, 923 Lifts, 3105 kms of piste and is valid between 01/10/09 and 15/05/10 costs €590 but for those with the residency papers in Tirol then the cost tumbles to [...]

So after a mild September in the Alps the weather is changing to bring colder and wet weather to Austria. Snow is forecast for the coming days on the higher ground as well as the glaciers and the snow is forecast through into next week. Temperatures are forecast to be down 10-15 degrees celcius on [...]
