Before long there are going to be calls to ‘change the record’. But whilst this autumn continues to amaze with its snow fall the message will be the same - October 2010 is the best I can ever remember. The snow just keeps falling and today in Axamer Lizum above Innsbruck the conditions were sensational [...]

The lifts weren’t running but they have to start very soon, the conditions in Axamer Lizum, Innsbruck, Austria today were sensational and it is still only the 21st October. The glacier skiing so far this autumn has been the best for very many years but now the traditional non-glacier resorts are in on the act [...]

Stuben am Arlberg is part of a geographic triangle in the Alps that includes Warth and Zurs am Arlberg which gets more snow than any other part of the Alps. No surprise then that the snow that is falling across Austria right now is also covering Stuben am Arlberg. Just had this image sent through [...]

Took another ride up to the Hintertux Glacier today. The skiing was great on-piste but the wind at the top station was mighty strong and the visibility wasn’t great. Still 42km of ski pistes open but today there were mainly the national ski teams training - gone were the partying free stylers from the weekend [...]

The autumn continues to confound - a whopping 42km of ski pistes are open on the Hintertux Glacier and the skiing and snowboarding is genuinely good with fresh groomed snow across the area down to the Tuxer Fernerhaus - also the location for a big freestyle and snowboard festival. And yes it is the 1st [...]

September 2010 will go down as one of the best season opener in many years. Today I was at the Stubai Glacier and there was well over half a metre of new snow that has fallen over the last few days offering some epic early season powder skiing conditions. October is often the month to [...]

Ok I will confess I was a day late, yesterday was the ultimate start to the winter season 10/11 anywhere in the Alps surely? Today I saw the tracks. There was 50cm of fresh snow on the 31st August and today the skies cleared over the Hintertux Glacier to reveal incredible September conditions. July, August [...]

Possibly not the primary reason for the visit of most of the guests to the Austrian Tirol this July but the snow-capped peaks around Innsbruck made for a wonderful welcome back after another stay in the UK. We had heard from a partner that St Anton had white peaks over the last few days but [...]

For those already missing the white peaks (myself certainly included) the last couple of days have provided a great tonic. Snow as far down as Fulpmes in the Stubai Valley in June is not unknown but may not be welcomed by all. I went up to Axamer Lizum today and the lower ski pistes were [...]

This morning brought new snow again in Gerlos after the 2nd night of snow in succession and with temperatures set to fall over the coming week and the arrival of new snow, Easter is looking good in Austria. I was over watching live music in Konigsleiten yesterday and today spent a bit more time around [...]

Spring may have arrived in Austria but tonight there was heavy snow in Gerlos. Dinner at the Hotel Kristall, Gerlos with huge snowflakes coming down outside the window was pretty special. Good weather over the weekend should make for some great skiing and then we are set for colder and snowier conditions later next week. [...]

In a world of changing weather patterns this winter has been a throw-back to days gone by. The winter has been persistently cold and the spring skiing has for now deserted us in Innsbruck with cold temperatures. The snow that is so common throughout March and April in the Tirol is here but the temperatures [...]

The onset of spring invariably worsens my mood and this year is no different. I would unquestionably take 12 months of snow if possible but other than a scientific station in Antarctica I realise this is unlikely and I do fall into line. I am filled with that warm feeling as another cold winter snap [...]

In a world of weather upheavals it has been unusually late (over recent years) for the arrival of warmer spring weather in Innsbruck. This winter might not have matched the bumper snowfall of last year, so far at least and based on anecdotal evidence but it has been consistently cold over here for many months [...]

After a few days of moderate to heavy snow the skies cleared yesterday and today whilst the valleys around Innsbruck had hazy sunshine the skiing above Innsbruck was superb with fresh powder and blue skies. Full car parks and many people on the slopes and for those on them the conditions are superb - the [...]
