After a November that can best be described as mild to reasonably cool, very sunny and very, very dry, then the arrival of December is bringing winter fully back to earth with heavy snow set to hit the west of Austria from this weekend onwards. Records for lack of precipitation have been smashed in the [...]

After the US took top prize in the women’s FIS season opener on the Rettenbach glacier above Solden, it was the turn of the men and once again the US took 1st place with Ted Ligety on top over the 2 legs. Results from yesterday were as follows:
1. Ted Ligety (USA) 2:22.00
2. Alexis Pinturault (FRA) [...]

New season and nothing new in seeing the US on top of the women’s podium. Lindsey Vonn took the opening FIS women’s race on the Rettenbach glacier today high above Solden with Elisabeth Görgl coming in third for the Austrians. More painful for the Austrians maybe seeing a German finish above any Austrians on their [...]

With the Tirol snow card now valid for the season, the Hintertux Glacier Betterpark opening festival already behind us and heavy snow forecast to arrive Friday and fall throughout the weekend then it is time to call the winter 2011/12 in Austria officially open. The glacier skiing should be pretty impressive over the weekend with [...]

With the FIS calendar soon to kick off, hospitality and atmosphere on a big scale are descending on the Alps. Things start off for the men in Solden on the weekend of the 22nd-23rd October with the men’s and women’s giant slalom. Solden has huge events going on to mark the FIS season opening and [...]

Those on the Stubai Glacier yesterday were served up a staggering 80cm of new snow - surely the best day of the autumn season so far. The other glaciers are also have superb snow depths:
Hintertux Glacier 155cm
Pitztal Glacier 143cm
Molltal Glacier 140cm
Kaunertal Glacier 123cm
Kitzsteinhorn Glacier 114cm
Solden Glacier 105cm
Not all good for those in the Stubai valley [...]

The Ski Welt is set to open this winter on the 4th December with a provisional earlier opening should the conditions be right. The farmers over here are predicting a cold winter so fingers crossed. Soll, Brixen, Westendorf and Ellmau as well as the other ski holiday resorts in the Ski Welt region are covered [...]

The case for suggesting Axamer Lizum, Innsbruck has the best skiing in Austria might be professional suicide – we pride ourselves in offering the very best information we (as a company) can give – to suggest Axamer Lizum ranks with the best skiing in Austria is fanciful. St Anton am Arlberg, Lech am Arlberg, Gerlos, [...]

After the unseasonal weather across the Alps the weather is set for a far colder period according to the long and short range forecasts. Whilst the Austrian glaciers have been in fantastic shape for autumn skiing they will soon be bursting at the seams as more people opt to go to them during the wait [...]

One of the themes that we feature on the new Skiing Austria website is the ‘best skiing in Austria’. We think that the best ski holiday resorts in Austria are Lech, St Anton, Stuben, Neustift, Solden, Konigsleiten, Gerlos and Zauchensee. There are some very big names in Austrian skiing clearly missing from this list and [...]

What a job - skiing between mountain huts getting beer and cake prices!
Everyone who has travelled (and I mean everyone) has inevitably been drawn into price comparisons with home prices as well as previous excursions – you hear it in every après ski bar, mountain restaurant, lift ticket office queue, everywhere. I was as shocked [...]

To a non-skier or snowboarder there must be a level of bewilderment in purchasing what can be a fairly expensive holiday with the guarantee of cold and short days. To have days of frustration, intermittent discomfort, to stand in queues for part of the day and to have your abilities exposed by local 5 year [...]

For the 2nd day on the Rettenbach glacier high above Solden the male racers in the Austrian ski team failed to rise to the weather, snow conditions or the partying fans who were all superb. Solden in the Otztal Valley had to rely on an Austrian from the next glacial valley, the Pitztal valley to [...]

With clouds breaking around 2800m in the Otztal Valley today the Rettenbach glacier was a dramatic place to be with clouds in the valleys and bright sunshine across the glaciers. Further snow had fallen over night and the start was delayed slightly as snow was cleared from the course. Austria came in 2nd but an [...]

So we will be covering 2 great events this weekend on the glaciers over here in Austria. The Stubai Glacier will be hosting the moreboards.com opening weekend freestyle event and party (as if that needing adding). Kathy will be our Skiing Austria ambassador over the weekend on the Stubai Glacier and has made a vow [...]
