Moelltaler glacier – April skiing as good as it gets |

There can’t be many better places to ski right now than the Moelltaler glacier in the southern Austrian province of Carinthia.

This area of the Southern Alps got whopping amounts of snow over the winter and the Moelltaler glacier was no exception with over 4m of snow pack still on the slopes in the last week of April. We were on the slopes this week and after a day waiting for the skies to clear we were rewarded with exceptional spring snow conditions under fantastic skies. The views were also something to behold. There were the usual race teams training on the snow-sure slopes but few others to compete for the sensational lines.

The Moelltaler glacier is set to close on the 11th May for around 6 weeks and then re-open for summer skiing – this effectively runs through to the close of the glacier in early summer 2015. Flattach is the main resort that accesses the Moelltaler glacier, whilst the Ankogel ski area offers another nearby skiing option – this region is well worth a look!
