WATCHING FILMS ABOVE THE CLOUDS
Each December, the Arlberg hosts a film festival where films are displayed in moving gondolas, on mountainsides and in mountain huts, offering a unique way of showcasing short films. The location is remarkable and the innovative canvases the organisers employ, creates a remarkable spectacle.
Being a country of outdoor sports, Austria naturally has film festivals in many regions, showcasing the action in the mountains. Other festivals taking place in the mountains have nothing at all to do with mountain sports, instead exhibiting cultural works from a variety of genres.
FILM FESTIVAL BASICS
Austrian film festivals in Tirol, Vorarlberg and Salzburgerland can readily be adopted into event programmes, with snow sports and other activities. Even non-film aficionados should come to appreciate the wonderful spectacle of visual arts being projected into stunning natural settings. Many (although not all) film festivals take place in the evening / night and can be the basis of evening entertainment.
The film festivals tend to take place out of the peak season times. They are open to the public and attract international exhibitors and audiences. The festivals are naturally open to non-skiers and much of the content is unrelated to skiing or snowboarding. Surrounding the film festivals there can be some whopping parties, whilst DJ’s and dance feature prominently during the events.
FILM FESTIVAL LOCATIONS
Lech am Arlberg hosts an annual film festival that takes place in the mountains high above the resort. Cable cars showing short films and playing DJ sets, whisk guests up to the peaks where light shows are beamed onto the snow fields, films are shown in huts and DJ sets play on the outdoor terraces.
Innsbruck is host to a leg of a freeride ski film world tour. The festival takes place close to the historic centre with a series of films showcasing the best amateur and professional freeride action. There are post-film events and expos organised around the film event, with some late-night parties.
