With over half of the glacier lift system in operation, the Stubai Glacier is getting into full swing. Runs were open to the mid-station. The usual early-season race training was taking place around the Daunferner Glacier. Cold and windy, the snow was impressive. Early season conditions last autumn went from fantastic to very icy overnight, after the mother of all windstorms. High winds on the Wildspitz, at 3210m, haven’t been sufficient to clear the recent snow from the pistes.
The fantastic Fernau glacier area is not yet open, but with the forecast snow, it is likely to open in the coming days. Whilst the chairlift and upper sections of the piste and glacier are closed, the lower section to the mid-station offered some great conditions today. The Daunscharte section of the glacier was also closed today – one of the best lift-accessed off-piste areas on the Stubai Glacier – offering the chance to ride the lift, traverse, and ride lines of deep snow. That is another gift that the Stubai Glacier is set to give soon.
The season is scheduled to run until mid-May, offering excellent options for both early and late-season corporate ski trips. The start of skiing varies by year, but in most cases, it begins in late September / early October, and conditions can be excellent from November onwards.
