Dry conditions, thus far in October 2023 have delayed the normal opening dates for the glacier skiing season. Usually, the glacier skiing areas of the Alps would be in full swing by this stage, but the snow over the weekend and a forecast with cooler, wetter weather should see things click into action quickly.
Stubai Glacier opened today
Today is the first day of winter ski operations on the Stubai Glacier. Limited to 9km of piste, the snow cannons are now in operation during the day and the terrain will expand as snow falls from the clouds and the cannons. It is a similar picture on the Pitztal Glacier whilst the Hintertux Glacier offers skiing throughout the year. Snow is forecast for later in the week.
FIS season opener
In 2 weeks, the FIS race calendar will get underway on the glacier above Sölden with GS races and a party that will have the valley reverberating to the sounds of familiar après ski classics. The season opening FIS race provides a fantastic backdrop for a corporate ski event, with a great race spectacle, impressive hospitality, and October’s biggest après ski party in the Alps.
November openings
Obergurgl and Ischgl are a couple of the big names in Austrian skiing which traditionally open earlier than most others, whilst the Arlberg will be welcoming skiers and boarders from the beginning of December.
