It caught many off guard, but the Krazy Kanguruh was levelled in recent weeks – a large hole on the mountainside beneath the Galzig and an even bigger space left in the world of après ski. This was no ordinary mountain hut – the Krazy Kanguruh was the purveyor of après ski drinks on an industrial scale. Few who visited St Anton on a corporate ski trip will have escaped its pull.

The legend

Opened in 1965, the Krazy Kanguruh quickly became one of the first après-ski bars in St. Anton, setting the tone for the resort’s legendary party culture. Founded by Gernot Schneider, it began as a simple ski hut offering drinks and music, attracting skiers who wanted to celebrate at the end of the day. Over the decades, it has grown in fame, becoming a must-visit spot for international visitors seeking lively après-ski on the slopes. In 2009, St Anton local and Olympic slalom champion Mario Matt purchased the bar, ensuring its tradition would continue with modern updates while keeping its classic atmosphere. The wooden terrace overlooking the slopes became iconic, often packed with dancing skiers in ski boots by mid-afternoon.

The future

The owners are tight-lipped about the future of this cultural hotspot. There is the cryptic message that the Krazy Kanguruh is not gone forever, and the neighbouring après ski bar and restaurant, Taps, remains largely unscathed, if somewhat dusty. It could be assumed that when the Krazy Kanguruh is reborn, it will largely fill the space that is currently vacant on the mountainside. Ski-in, ski-out spa and wellness. It just won’t happen.
